Leadership for Young People
Introducing leadership to young people is one of the most exciting and rewarding things I have had the privilege to create. Young people are naturally curious, adaptable, and eager to explore ideas that grow their confidence and capabilities.
Through my work, I have developed and delivered a range of workshops, activities, and programmes that help young people discover their authentic leadership styles and build the confidence to lead their peers.
Why is Leadership important with young people?
In every youth setting, we hope to create a culture where each person feels warmly welcomed, develops a sense of belonging, and is celebrated and supported by their peers. While adults can try to foster this environment, it ultimately belongs to the young people - they are the only ones who can truly create and sustain an authentic culture. It’s easy to gather young people, start talking to them as adults, and then move straight into the artistic activity. But by skipping the moments where welcome, belonging, and celebration are nurtured, we risk preventing our young people from truly thriving. Without those feelings, they may hold back, fear making mistakes, or even choose not to return. These vital emotions aren’t developed during the main activity itself; they happen in the gaps - before calling everyone to order, during the queues for refreshments, or while packing up. These are the moments where young leaders can have an incredible impact on their peers, and when they do, the entire community’s culture and energy are lifted to a new level.
Why do young people need guidance?
Leadership is the art of influencing others, and it requires determination, effort, and self-awareness. Young people have immense potential, but they need to be empowered to step into leadership roles and given the confidence to believe in themselves. I’ve heard many teenagers say, “I’m not a leader, I’m too shy,” or “I don’t know how to make people feel welcome,” or “I just want to hang out with my current friends.” These feelings are valid - they reflect their authentic selves. However, as they grow up, they also want to take on responsibility and explore new roles. By providing young people with the confidence, practical skills, and a sense of agency, they often surprise themselves, passionately embracing leadership and surpassing their own expectations of what they’re capable of achieving.
Young people are some of the most powerful agents of change within our organisations - they have the ability to drive a group’s success and create a community where everyone feels inspired and valued. When we take the time to empower them in this way, the results are truly extraordinary, benefiting everyone involved.
My range of workshops and activities is designed to introduce young people to core leadership concepts, help them explore their personal leadership values, and unlock their problem-solving skills. These sessions encourage them to take ownership of their culture and experiences, while additional activities demonstrate how leadership skills transfer to their music-making—showing how music can amplify their sense of leadership and confidence.
I work with both adults and young people in workshops that blend discussion, interactive challenges, and music-making, while also integrating role modeling and inclusive behaviors. I support professionals in developing their own practice to support young people. I focus on guiding leadership and inclusivity by exploring the nature of influence, embracing personal authenticity, unlocking creativity for problem-solving, and fostering empathy.
All my workshops are adaptable to both adults and young people. Leadership is for everyone.
